Violence In Media

This text is a clip from a movie. The movie was American History X, and I had first seen it with a friend last year.

This video is displaying gratuitous violence. It is not justified and even though it only last for a few seconds it hits you hard when viewing. The way the blood is sprayed across the walls and how abrupt this scene is what I find so violent.

If using violence is absolutely needed to express a scene or mood and it has a specific reason then I think that violence is justifiable. For example when we viewed the beginning clip of Saving Private Ryan, it was a bloody massacre and it was justifiable because of the reason that the movie was based on war and the director/producer wanted the viewers to see how terrible and how horrifying it really was to be in combat. When violence is used in a manner that is gratuitous it is used unjustifiably. If the extreme amount of violence is not needed to prove a point then I find that kind to be gratuitous.

The movie itself is rated 18A, and the clip I had chosen is not even the most violent scene. With the easy access to internet it is very easy to view this media for any person at any age. I don’t agree with the fact that kids who are easily manipulated can view this media. I do not think it is right for people who are under this rating should view it. I found it very disturbing and the idea of younger people view this is worrisome.

This piece of media is just a small portion of a very powerful and dark movie. The clip although short has so much power and feeling. I personally loved this movie and the ending scene to me is the strongest point of the movie. And even though the violence within the scene may not seem to be as bad compared to others the amount of intensity increases it.

Task Five: Course Evaluation

Over course of this semester I have learned so much about media in the EMS 3O class. There are so many thing about media that people don’t realize and one was to take this course they would discover all of the tricks and techniques that are used to pull you into a product. Every time I watch TV and commercials come on I sit and depict what the target audience is, what codes and conventions were used to attract one to this commercial. I love being able to pick apart the ads I see now. This course has taught me why advertisers use certain props and special effects and that is to attract a certain group of people, and attempt to get that person interested in their product by incorporating the things that group of people enjoy. I have learned that in the media whether a celebrity is exposed in a positive or negative way that exposure is what builds that celebrity and can also lead to that celebrities destruction. In movies I watch I will pick out all of the things that are used to make that movie so great and pick out the things that could have been worked on more. I realize that media is literately everywhere and surrounds our entire lives. The media builds on to our likes and dislikes and can persuade one to act on things we wouldn’t normally do. This course has been one of my favourite classes and has taught me so much. Some things I did not like about the course is that we did not end up watching the movie Thirteen.. I was really looking forward to that Mr. Chalmers. I think I would of liked got more hands on projects, and maybe of gone on some sort of trip for one of the units

Task Four

Blood Diamond was directed by Edward Zwick, and is a Warner Brothers film. The main actors are Leonardo DiCaprio, Jenifer Connelly, and Djimon Hounsou. This movie was released on December 8th 2OO6. A story following Archer, a man tortured by his past. With a strong instinct, he has made himself a key player in the business of conflict diamonds. Political unrest is rampant in Sierra Leone as people fight tooth for tooth. Upon meeting Solomon, and the beautiful Maddy, Archer's life changes forever as he is given a chance to make peace with the war around him, and help those who are stuck in it.

I love this movie. The whole concept and plot of this movie is what I love the most. It is not like most movies I find. This one has a hard hitting main topic and has an inspirational theme. I liked in this movie how shows al the emotions and shows the bond that two people can make when there is trouble in the air. Blood Diamond shows how important family is when the main character is at the stage of loosing his wife and children. It shows just how far someone will go for their family, and the risks that will be made to abort those troubles.

Task Four

The Lion King is a Walt Disney movie, and distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment. This movie was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff. The music of The Lion King was written by Hans Zimmer. The movie was released on June 24th 1994. Tricked into thinking he killed his father, Simba a guilt ridden lion cub flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future King. Allowing his evil uncle to take over Pride Rock and destroy Simba’s home land. .

The Lion is a heart filled movie that has been my favourite since I first saw it when I was about two years old. The meaning I always got from The Lion King was that you will always belong somewhere and you just have to make it known that where you are is where you want to be. The idea that running away from your problems and worries doesn’t solve them it eventually just makes them worse, I had always got this belief from the Lion King movie and its plot. Only facing your fears and troubles can abolish them. Walt Disney has was always able to create a cartoon movie with such heart and meaning and that is what the Lion king is full of, and that is what I love.

Task Four: Blockbuster Movies & Media

The Guardian was directed by Andrew Davis and produced by Armyan Bernstein. The starring actors that played in this movie are Ashton Kutcher, Kevin Costner and Melissa Sagemiller. The movie was released on September 29th 2OO6. The production company that this movie was distributed by was Touchstone Pictures & Beacon Communications. The plot of this movie is A high school swim champion with troubled past experiences enrols in the U.S. Coast Guard's "A" School, where legendary rescue swimmer Ben Randall teaches him some lessons about the loss, love, and self-sacrifice of becoming a true Coast Guard.

This movie is in my top 3 favourite movies. The actors were all so perfectly suited for the roles in this movie, which is part of the reason why I love this movie so much. This movie shows you the real life of a Coast Guard and all the difficulties that they undergo and sacrifice their lives for. The plot of the movie is really eye catching too, because of the hard acting teacher who pushes his students to achieve the goal of being the best coast guard. The main character Jake is a stubborn student at this coast guard school and strives to achieve the goal of beating Ben Randall his teacher at all the records he has set. The movie shows real character and feeling towards the things coast guards do. The movie is inspirational, and makes you want to strive for your goals and make them happen.

This video is the closing scene of The Guardian. I like this scene because you see situations that really occur when being a coast gaurd.

Task Three: Advertising & Me

M.A.D.D- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGwaKroBl8c
This commercial is for MADD, Mother’s Against Drunk Driving. This commercial uses two different types of techniques. The first technique is repetition. Repetition is when advertisers hope that if you see the same thing over and over that you will buy into whatever is being sold or in this case what the right thing to do is. This was an effective technique to use because when you see the pictures repeating of peoples faces being harmed very badly it makes you upset and want to try to do things that will not lead you with the same injuries, this being not to drink and drive. The second technique used is facts and figures. This is when spastics and facts are used. This commercial used statistics to prove a point that people who drink and drive are very likely to get into a fatal car accident or leave themselves seriously injured. This is an effective tool to use because it shows you how heart breaking it is to see how many people loose there lives to drinking and driving, and people who have been killed by a drunk driver. This commercial used the techniques very well to its advantage.

This commercial is very important to me, along with any M.A.D.D advertisements and commercials that have a strong importance. The reason I chose this commercial is because it holds a very strong message to me and my family. My brothers best friend Brady, who he grew up with lost his life to a drunk driver. Since he had been my brothers best friend and was over everyday my sister and I had thought of him as an older brother. When the accident happened it devastated my entire family especially my brother. To see how this crushed my brother was so upsetting. He didn’t go out, he didn’t even leave his room for a long time after Brady passed. To see how this can effect one person so badly is heart breaking and no human being should feel that much sorrow and sadness. Anything having to do due with M.A.D.D is very important and I can now see that this does really happen and it can happen to anyone. People don’t really ever think something bad will happen to THEM, and what they don’t understand is that it does, it can happen to anyone. These commercials are made to prevent you from ending up dead or injured. They raise a great amount of awareness and I am in agreement with what M.A.D.D do to raise this awareness
.

ProActive -
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moPZNg-2878

The second commercial I chose was the Proactive commercial with Katy Perry. The advertising technique that was used was Star Power. Star Power is when a celebrity you like is being used to promote a product. This technique is very useful and effective. If your favourite celebrity is using a product then you will want to use that product to. Having a celebrity tell you about how good this product is and how well it works is effective because you will not believe that your favourite celebrity would lie to you about the promoted product.

I chose Proactive because I actually use this product. Katy Perry happens to be one of my favourite celebrities as well. I bought this product I wanted to have a clear complexion, and with all the celebrities who claim it to work so well I thought why not. Surprisingly it worked really well and made me think about how the celebrities that promote this product probably actually had good results from this product as well

Task Two

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in Massachusetts on March 2nd 1904 to Henrietta Seuss and Theodor Robert Geisel. Theodor was an American writer and cartoonist most widely known for his children's books written under the name of Dr. Seuss. Theodor published over 60 children's books, which were often described as imaginative characters, and with impeccable rhyme. His most celebrated books include the bestselling Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Horton Hears a Who, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Some of these wifely known books have been created into films such as Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His honours included two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Dr. Seuss was on of my favourite writers. I loved his books growing up and still have my Seuss collection. His books had such character and were written with incredible rhyme. I have always been a fan of Seuss’s books and they had always left some sort of tale or message. The lines in some of his books were so inspirational for example, the quote “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” is one of my favourite quotes. Dr. Seuss had always tried to make a point about being who are and that if someone didn’t like you than they don’t matter. I liked this quality about Dr. Seuss.
